After his father is injured, young Haakon Haakonsen takes a job as a cabin boy aboard a ship in order to support his family. There, he befriends shipmate Jens who teaches Haakon how to be a sailor. Midway through the voyage, a girl named Mary is found stowed away. This, coupled with the untimely death of the captain, spurs a mutiny that ultimately sinks the ship, leaving Haakon and Mary shipwrecked on a desert island.
