Interwoven Stories: Persian book arts in the age of spices

18 July, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

| Free with exhibition ticket

Between the mid-15th century and the end of the 17th century, new maritime trade routes opened up between Europe and Asia in response to the Ottoman capture of Constantinople/Istanbul in 1453 and the subsequent end of Venetian control over European trade with the Middle East and

beyond. Merchants from the Islamic world became key figures in the global trading community and in the ensuing exchange of cultural ideas and art objects. Luxuriously illustrated manuscripts describing epic histories and romances were reinterpreted in diverse cultural settings and adapted for use on textiles and other media such as ceramics, woodwork and precious metals.

Speakers :  Dr Susan Scollay (Independent art historian, curator specialising in the arts and culture of the Islamic world and in historic textiles)
