Journey to Marege: The Story of Makssan-Indigenous Australian Contact in the Era Prior to European Colonisation

29 August, 2015 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

| Free with exhibition ticket

From as early as the 17th century until 1900, Makassan boats regularly visited the northern waters of Australia, known as Marege, to fish and exchange products with Indigenous communities. The visits of these Indonesian Muslims had a profound effect on the spiritual, cultural and artistic life of the Yolngu and other Indigenous people which continues until today. This talk will examine the history of these maritime contacts and the inspiration of Makassan culture documented in Indigenous Australian art and ceremonial life.

Speakers :  James Bennett (Curator of Asian Art, co-curator of Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices)
